Getting Started

Getting Started in the Zeek Community

Welcome to the Zeek Project!

Here are a few suggestions to help you jump start your participation in the project.

The Zeek Project consists of volunteers. Volunteers help create, maintain and drive the direction and growth of the project. We are actively looking for contributors who have an interest in Zeek, and have some free time.

If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to look over our Code of Conduct and find out what we’re all about

Communication

A lot of our communication and discussion happens on our Discourse server and in our Slack workspace, so one of the first things you should do is to join these. You’re also welcome to follow us on Mastodon or Twitter.

Learning

Our Youtube channel offers a sizable collection of educational material. Also make sure to take a look at our documentation.

Contributions

Zeek Core: If you are interested in working on the Zeek code base, then you’ll want to look at the current list of issues in GitHub.  Also take a look at the Zeek Project wiki page.

Zeek Packages: If you are interested in writing a Zeek Package, you’ll want to take a look at: Documentation, Zeek Package Manager, Package Repository, and the #packages Slack channel.

Other Ways to Contribute: There are many ways to contribute to the Zeek project without writing code.  For instance, you can test development releases or contribute documentation, blog posts, or webinars. You can help with the Zeek Newsletter, or promote Zeek events.  To learn more about any of these opportunities, please join our Discourse and Slack spaces, introduce yourself, and let us know what you’re wanting to help with.  We’ll get you pointed in the right direction!
